Fallstudie: Brewer's Grain

Brewer's grain is a vegetable residue from the production of beer and other malt beverages. The material has a high nutritional value and is a popular feed supplement for livestock. Dairy farmers consider brewer's grain to be a highly palatable and absorptive feedstock that helps stimulate milk production.

However, due to the high moisture content, fresh brewer's grain has a very short shelf life. This puts constraints on the handling, storing and long-range transport unless expensive and energy intensive drying processes are used.

Packing brewer's grain in Flexus round baling system offers new possibilities to overcome these constraints. The fresh brewer's grain is compacted and sealed/wrapped in plastic film to create a stable product that is easy to handle, allows for flexible transport and can be stored for long periods while keeping the feed fresh with maintained nutritional value.

Advantages for producers:

  • No drying required
  • Intermediate storage during peak production for year round delivery is possible
  • Long range transport opens up new markets
  • Economic even for small livestock businesses
  • Flexible transport by road, rail or ship
  • No contamination of the feed during transport

Advantages for end-users:

  • Bales are easy to handle and use
  • Long term storage possible
  • No storage silo required
  • Economic even for small livestock businesses
